This is easy. When I have an idea for a new business, to execute, I have to recruit a team. To recruit a team - because I don’t have any money, so I can’t hire the team - I have to create True Believers. People who will forego doing something else - things they enjoy, things that might pay a lot more, things on their “I need to do this” list - to instead spend that time with me. Doing my thing. Now, if I should choose to never ever tell anyone, how exactly am I going to find those people? Anyone? Bueller? Yeah. I’m not. Period. Full stop. How about if I only tell people that I super-duper trust and tell them not to ever, ever, ever tell anyone? I’ll give you a hint: same answer. Nothing happens. Probably. There’s some non-zero chance that somewhere in there I find someone, but odds are against it. But if I tell people that I trust, and ask them who they know that might be interested, and have them ask people they know… I create a ripple effect, that reaches to well beyond the limits of my personal network. And as those wave reflect and return, as all waves in a closed system do, they carry with them all sorts of things. Thoughtful responses. Ideas. People passionate about explaining why what I propose is crazy (those are the best, because when I flip them there is no one more partisan). That’s where my team comes from. People who grab on to the idea, to the notion, to the audacity of what I’m proposing, who want to come along for the ride. Maybe they’re ridden with me before. Maybe they’ve heard of other things I’ve done. Maybe they are completely seduced by the opportunity to Boldly Go. But I never, ever find them, unless I ASK. Until I put it forth into the universe, and say “come follow me”.
