Yukon Pond Plaque

The taiga, or boreal forest, covers vast parts of the high-latitude north from Northern Europe through European Russia and Siberia, to Alaska and Canada, between the steppes to the south and the treeless tundra farther to the north. The taiga is chraacterised by all but endless conifer forest, the swampy land dotted with lakes and ponds. Black Spruce, Picea mariana, are very common and takes on a columnar form when growing in wet terrain as in this view from near Beaver Creek, Yukon Territory. During the summer mosquitoes can be unbelievably numerous.
