Yorktown Victory Monument Ornament
The idea for theYorktown Victory Monument, also called the “Monument to the Alliance and Victory,” was conceived within days of Cornwallis’ surrender, but money was short and construction was repeatedly delayed. Congress passed an act to build the monument in 1880, and construction officially began on October 18, 1881, 100 years after the decisive victory against the British at Yorktown. The monument pays tribute to the alliance between the United States and France.
