Canola is a type of rapeseed. In the 1970s, canola was created through traditional plant cross-breeding by removing glucosinolates and erucic acid from the rapeseed. In high doses, erucic acid was believed to be inedible or toxic. The new plant was renamed “canola,” a combination of “Canadian” and “oil” (or ola) to clarify the difference. For this reason, canola is not available in Europe.
