(Omitted) One theory is that the wood sorrel was chosen for its reproductive properties, but this is a bit of an overstatement. It is thought to have been chosen for its elegant shape and derived from a pattern. (From "Japanese Mon Studies") Wood sorrel is one of the three major family crests, along with wisteria and quince.
