    William Turner - Bell Rock Lighthouse Notebook

    Bell Rock Lighthouse, created by Joseph Mallord William Turner in 1819 in watercolour and gouache with scratching out on paper, shows Robert Stevenson’s lighthouse battered by a violent storm off the east coast of Scotland. Turner had never visited the site; Stevenson commissioned the image for his Account of the Bell Rock Lighthouse, and Turner based the scene on Stevenson’s description of a storm striking the lighthouse. The turbulent sea, crashing waves and dramatic sky showcase Turner’s mastery of marine atmosphere, light and movement.
