He was born in Walthamstow, East London, into a wealthy family, and was educated at Oxford University. Morris's interest in art and design began during his time at Oxford, where he became friends with the artist and designer Edward Burne-Jones. Together they formed a lifelong artistic partnership, collaborating on many projects throughout their careers. In 1856, Morris began working for the Gothic Revival architect G.E. Street, where he was exposed to medieval architecture and design, which had a profound influence on his work. He later became a partner in the decorative arts company Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co., which later became known as Morris & Co. This company produced a wide range of decorative arts, including furniture, stained glass, textiles, and wallpaper, all of which were designed by Morris and his associates. Morris was also an accomplished writer and poet, and he wrote extensively on topics ranging from art and design to politics and social justice. He was a committed socialist and an advocate for workers' rights and fair labor practices. Morris's legacy as an artist, designer, and social activist continues to be celebrated today.
