The Lovers Whirlwind depicts a scene from the fifth canto in which Virgil and Dante view the fate of the lustful, who are set spinning through eachothers arms for all eternity. Blake illustrates the scene beautifully with a whirling cyclone of lovers very reminiscent of the swirling patterns later utilised in Van Gogh’s Starry Night. Blake employs a lovely mixture of organic blues, yellows and creams to make this scene from the Divine Comedy come to life.
