Weltenburg Abbey Brewery - Germany / Danube

Fridge Magnet / Magnetic Card: Weltenburg Abbey Brewery along the Danube is the oldest monastic brewery in the world. This amazing historical building hidden on the bank of the river under rocky cliffs called Danube Gorge has been in operation since 1050. To get there it’s best to go by boat (either large tourist boat or small wooden chartered ‘Zille’ boat) from Kelheim. You’ll travel up the Danube though the limestone cliffs in one of the most picturesque areas of the Danube River. The Abbey is still in operation today, and not only boasts a beach, church, and brewery, but also a great beer garden in the abbey courtyard. Like most historic monk breweries, they specialise in dark strong beers that were created in order to ‘help’ them through the Lenten fast with strong grains for sustenance.
