Water Lily Pond by Claude Monet, oil on canvas 1917-1919, is a panoramic landscape of lily flower pads floating on placid water, with warm green reflections of surrounding plants, trees and sky encompassing the entire view. Monet painted the lilies in the large flower garden that surrounded his home and studio in Giverny, France. With broad, almost sketchy strokes of loosely applied, lush strokes and scumbles of oil colours, the artist dematerialises the distinctions between solid form, water, atmosphere, light, and colour to create an image of near abstraction. Many of the late paintings of Monet powerfully influenced the abstract schools of painting of the 20th century, and remain some of his most beloved works to this day.
