About This Design

Vintage - The Lucky Dogs,

Vintage - The Lucky Dogs,

Vintage artwork titled "The Lucky Dogs" by Richard Ansdell depicts a group of dogs sitting around a man and enjoying the music he's playing. The English artist, Richard Ansdell (1815-1885) was born in Liverpool. He had a natural talent for art at a young age. His animal and rural paintings became popular, and he attracted wealthy patrons. After his marriage, the family moved to Kensington and the Ansdell went on to have 11 children. He exhibited every year at the Royal Academy, and travelled to Spain several times to produce artwork. He was known to sometimes be a bit too proud, particularly when Queen Victoria wanted to commission him to paint some of her pet dogs, and he refused unless the dogs were brought to his studio. He never received any royal commissions to paint. Another painter of that time, Edwin Landseer, became the predominant artist who painted Queen Victoria’s dogs as well as other portraits for the royal family. Lovely quality cards. Nice to get a real traditional Chrismassy theme in Australia, not the beach and Australian animals stuff. Excellent, would use again
