Vintage Maxfield Parrish Alphabet - Bag
“Alphabet”, Maxfield Parrish, 1909; Oil on board.
Maxfield Parrish, 1870 – 1966) was an American painter and illustrator active in the first half of the twentieth century. He is known for his distinctive saturated hues and idealised neo-classical imagery.
He entered into an artistic career that lasted for more than half a century, and which helped shape the Golden Age of illustration and the future of American visual arts.
A young boy is at the centre of this print sitting on the capital letter “E” reading a book titled “a b c”. He is completely surrounded by every letter of the alphabet in every colour and shape. The black letters in this print spell out “The Collier’s National Weekly”. Parrish did many covers for this American magazine that was published from 1888 to 1957.
