Vintage Depiction of Joan of Arc Postcard
Joan of Arc, a peasant girl in mediaeval France, said she received visions of the Archangel Michael, Saint Margaret, and Saint Catherine of Alexandria instructing her to help King Charles VII to free France from English domination late in the Hundred Years' War. After achieving victory, she was captured by Anglo-Burgundian forces, tried for witchcraft and heresy and burned at the stake in 1431, at the age of 19. She was nicknamed "The Maid of Orléans", canonised in 1920 and serves as an enduring symbol of French unity and nationalism
