Vintage Cologne Cathedral Germany Magnet

Rising dramatically above the Rhine River, the Cologne Cathedral, or Kölner Dom, stands as a masterpiece of High Gothic architecture and one of Germany's most celebrated landmarks. Although its construction began in 1248, it wasn't completed until 1880, adhering strictly to the original mediaeval plans. Its twin spires, reaching 157 metres high, were for a short time the tallest structures in the world and dominate the city's skyline. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the cathedral is a place of pilgrimage, housing the Shrine of the Three Kings, a magnificent 13th-century reliquary believed to contain the remains of the Magi. The exterior of the cathedral is a stunning display of flying buttresses, intricate stonework, and thousands of carved details, all made from local sandstone which gives the building its characteristic dark patina. Visitors are overwhelmed by the sheer scale and craftsmanship before even entering. Inside, the vast nave is illuminated by sunlight filtering through some of the finest examples of stained glass in the world, including the modern, pixel-like Richter window. The cathedral's interior is a profound testament to mediaeval engineering and artistry, with vaulted ceilings that soar 43 metres high, creating a space that feels both immense and ethereal.
