Vintage - Clumber Spaniels & a Mouse,

Vintage artwork titled "An Unexpected Visitor" by John Emms depicts a scene in a barn or stable where a group of five Clumber Spaniels are resting in the hay with their food bowl on the floor. Suddenly, an unexpected visitor joins them...a tiny mouse runs out onto the floor towards the food bowl, and one dog who sees it is very curious about the mouse. The English artist, John Emms (1844-1912) was an avid hunter and became famous for his paintings of sporting scenes, horses and dogs, particularly Foxhounds and Terriers. He married a woman from Lyndhurst in 1880, and after a brief residence in London, they returned to Lyndhurst where they established a home and studio called The Firs. Emms lived there for the remainder of his life. He was famous not only for his artwork, but also for his big personality, flamboyant style of dressing, and often careless spending of money.
