Vincent van Gogh - The Old Mill Notebook

The Old Mill (La Maison de La Crau), painted in 1888 in oil on canvas by Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh in Arles. The weathered building stands in the flat landscape of La Crau outside Arles, surrounded by roads, fields and low vegetation. Van Gogh treated the mill and farmhouse structures with firm outlines and contrasting colours, emphasizing their geometric presence beneath the Provençal sky. The work belongs to his first months in the south, when rural buildings and working landscapes became central subjects.
