Oil on canvas from 1889, this self portrait showing Van Gogh with his bandaged ear and wearing a purple fur-lined cap and green coat with Japanese art in the background, was painted after his breakdown in December 1888 when he cut off his earlobe with a razor following an argument with his roomate, Paul Gauguin.
