    Self-Portrait / Portrait of the Artist (Portrait de l'artiste), painted in 1887 in oil on canvas by Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh in Paris. Van Gogh made numerous self-portraits in Paris because he could practice figure painting without paying for a sitter. In this autumn portrait, the face is built from short directional strokes and brighter colours that reflect the transformation of his palette after encountering Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism. The direct gaze and compact framing make the painting both a likeness and an experiment in colour, touch and self-observation.
