About This Design

Vincent Van Gogh - Postman Joseph Roulin Ceramic Tile

Vincent Van Gogh - Postman Joseph Roulin Ceramic Tile

Portrait of Joseph Roulin / Portrait of the Postman Joseph Roulin (Joseph-Étienne Roulin, le postier), painted in 1889 in oil on canvas by Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh in Arles. One of several portraits Van Gogh made of his friend Joseph Roulin, this canvas transforms the Arles postman into a striking emblem of character and companionship. Roulin's uniform anchors the image while Van Gogh's expressive colour gives the portrait a presence far removed from conventional official portraiture. The series was central to Van Gogh's ambition to create portraits that conveyed something enduring about the sitter beyond simple resemblance.
