Four Cut Sunflowers, painted in 1887 in oil on canvas by Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh in Paris. Four cut sunflower heads are spread across the broad canvas, their forms seen at close range rather than arranged upright in a vase. Painted in Paris, the work belongs to Van Gogh's first sustained exploration of sunflowers and shows his interest in their changing shapes as they open, wilt and dry. Thick paint and strong complementary contrasts give the still life a physical intensity that anticipates the Arles series of the following year.
