This painting is based on Ecclesiastes 1:2, which says "Vanity of vanities! All is vanity." The painting shows a book open to a map of the East Indies, which was a place where the Dutch made a large fortune. Another book is open to the early history of Holland. Pearls represent the pleasures of life, while the hourglass shows the passage of time. The heavens and the earth are represented by two different globes.

I hung this in the stairwell of our house, near some other Renoir pictures. My daughter says it looks like she is looking at her when she walks up the stairs.
it's called "The Excursionist", she is holding a walking stick. Renoir was an impressionist, I don't think this is an actual person. The finished framed picture arrived and looks better than the online pic - Beautiful!
