The United States Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) is one of ten unified commands of the United States Department of Defence. The mission of USTRANSCOM is to provide air, land and sea transportation for the Department of Defence, both in time of peace and time of war. USTRANSCOM, located at Scott Air Force Base Illinois, was established in 1987. As the single manager of America's global defence transportation system, USTRANSCOM is tasked with the coordination of people and transportation assets to allow the US to project and sustain forces, whenever, wherever, and for as long as they are needed. Composed of three component commands: The Air Force's Air Mobility Command, the Navy's Military Sealift Command and the Army's Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, USTRANSCOM coordinates missions worldwide using both military and commercial transportation resources. Agencies within the command headquarters include JOSAC (Joint Operational Support Airlift Centre). The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 7 December 2001. Brick red and golden yellow are the colours traditionally used by Transportation units. The sun and demi-globe allude to Illinois, the Prairie State, and the location of the organisation. It also highlights the command's worldwide mission to provide air, land and sea transportation to the Department of Defence. The spear represents the military readiness and the command's leadership endeavour in wartime conflict and peacetime operations. The winged seahorse is adapted from the United States Transportation Command's badge.
