UNESCO WHS Serie - World Heritage Sites in Romania Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania - Biserici fortificate din Transilvania - Village of Prejmer-Tartlau - These Transylvanian villages with their fortified churches provide a vivid picture of the cultural landscape of southern Transylvania. The 7 villages inscribed, founded by the Transylvanian Saxons, are chraacterised by a specific land-use system, settlement pattern and organisation of the family farmstead. They are dominated by their fortified churches, built from the 13th to the 16th century. Prejmer is noted for its fortified church, one of the best preserved of its kind in Eastern Europe. It is modelled after churches of Jerusalem, as well as built in the style of Late Gothic churches. In the 15th century, it was surrounded by a wall 12m high, forming a quadrilateral with rounded corners. The wall was reinforced by four horseshoe-shaped towers, two of which have since disappeared.
