UNESCO WHS Serie - World Heritage Sites in Romania Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania - Biserici fortificate din Transilvania - Village of Biertan - These Transylvanian villages with their fortified churches provide a vivid picture of the cultural landscape of southern Transylvania. The 7 villages inscribed, founded by the Transylvanian Saxons, are chraacterised by a specific land-use system, settlement pattern and organisation of the family farmstead. They are dominated by their fortified churches, built from the 13th to the 16th century. Biertan gained its importance as a marketplace in competition with Mediaş and Moşna during the Middle Ages and was the seat of the bishop of the Evangelic Church from 1572 to 1867. Therefore three mighty ring walls, two outer baileys and several defence towers protected the ensemble.
