Glacier-clad peaks interspersed with extensive alpine meadows are surrounded by an extensive old growth forest, among which is the best example of intact and protected temperate rainforest in the Pacific Northwest. The Olympic Mountains are a mountain range on the Olympic Peninsula. A large portion of the range is contained within the Olympic National Park. The Elwha River is a 45-mile (72 km) river on the Olympic Peninsula. From its source in the Olympic Mountains, it flows generally north to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Most of the river's course is within the Olympic National Park. The Elwha is one several rivers in the Pacific Northwest that hosts all five species of native Pacific salmon.
