UNESCO WHS Serie - World Heritage Sites in Spain Mudejar Architecture of Aragon / Arquitectura mudéjar de Aragón The development in the 12th century of Mudejar art in Aragon resulted from the particular political, social and cultural conditions that prevailed in Spain after the Reconquista. This art, influenced by islamic tradition, also reflects various contemporary European styles, particularly the Gothic. Present until the early 17th century, it is chraacterised by an extremely refined and inventive use of brick and glazed tiles in architecture, especially in the belfries. The church of Saint Mary is a Mudejar-style Catholic church-fortress and was built between 1356 and 1405-1410. Promoted by the Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Calatayud, it is a prototype of a church-fortress, a unique concept in Spain at the time.
