UNESCO WHS Serie - Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities) - 古都京都の文化財（京都市、宇治市、大津市） - Kiyomizu-dera - 清水寺 - Built in A.D. 794 on the model of the capitals of ancient China, Kyoto was the imperial capital of Japan from its foundation until the middle of the 19th century. As the centre of Japanese culture for more than 1‘000 years, Kyoto illustrates the development of Japanese wooden architecture, particularly religious architecture, and the art of Japanese gardens. The site contains 17 Historic locations. Kiyomizu-dera, officially Otowasan Kiyomizu-dera, is an independent Buddhist temple in eastern Kyoto. The temple was founded in 778 by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, and its present buildings were constructed in 1633, ordered by the Tokugawa Iemitsu. There is not a single nail used in the entire structure. It takes its name from the waterfall within the complex. Kiyomizu means clear water, or pure water.
