World Heritage Sites in Spain Mudejar Architecture of Aragon / Arquitectura mudéjar de Aragón The development in the 12th century of Mudejar art in Aragon resulted from the particular political, social and cultural conditions that prevailed in Spain after the Reconquista. This art, influenced by islamic tradition, also reflects various contemporary European styles, particularly the Gothic. Present until the early 17th century, it is chraacterised by an extremely refined and inventive use of brick and glazed tiles in architecture, especially in the belfries. The Cathedral of the Saviour is a Roman Catholic cathedral. It is located on the Plaza de la Seo and is commonly known as La Seo. The location of the Seo has its roots in the old Roman forum. The edifice underwent two islamic additions in the 9th and 11th century. The destruction of the mosque and the construction of the Romanesque cathedral began in 1140. In 1346 a Mudéjar dome was started to provide light at the altar. In the interior, the roof is constructed of gilded wood, also in the Mudéjar style.
