Ultima Thule or Kuiper Belt Object 2014 MU69 is the ancient orbiting the Sun far beyond the orbit of Pluto. It was visited on January 1, 2019 by NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft, which took this black and white photograph just before the nearest encounter on the imaging flyby. Note the peanut shape formed by two lobes joined by a bright collar and the deep depression on the smaller lobe of this small KBO. Note: Ultima Thule has been officially named Arrokoth or Kuiper Belt Object 486958.
