They don't bark, but they make happy sounds like a chortle or yodel and when they are sad, they wail. The Basenji is a member of the Hound Group and was first recognised by the AKC in 1944. Other names for this breed include: African Bush Dog, African Barkless dog, Ango Angari, Avuvi, Congo Dog, Zande Dog and the Jumping up and down dog. The title character in the 1954 novel, 'Good-bye, My Lady' by James H. Street was a Basenji. This is the perfect dog breed gift, telling all about Basenjis.
