    【ちゅうわにとりい】鳥居紋は、鳥居を象った紋である。鳥居は、その形が種々あるといわれるが、紋章に取り入れられているのは明神鳥居だけである。鳥居を紋章に選んだのは、瑞籬（みづがき）・千木竪魚木（ちぎかつおぎ）などを紋章に選んだのと同じく、神社関係の物だから、神聖であるとしたらしく、信仰的意義に基づくものである。（沼田頼輔著「日本紋章学」）
