Torez (Ukrainian: Торез; before 1964: Chistyakovo, Russian: Чистяково, Chystyakove, Ukrainian: Чистякове) is a city in Donetsk Oblast of Ukraine. Population - 82,900. Most residents living here are working in the mining industry, although the proportion employed in mining is declining. In 1978 there were 97,000 residents in the city, down from a peak of about 120,000 in 1970. The city was renamed from Chystyakove to Torez in honour of the French Communist Party leader Maurice Thorez, in 1964, the year of his death.
