Ariadne was the daughter of Minos, King of Crete and his queen Pasiphaë, daughter of Helios. Theseus was among the youths of Athens who was to be sacrificed to the minotaur which lived deep in a labyrinth on the island of Crete. Ariadne who loved Theseus helped him to escape. She gave Theseus a sword to kill the minotaur. And Ariadne gave Theseus a wooden string he unraveled on his way in and followed on his way out. After a night of passion, Ariadne never saw Theseus again.
