This work is part of Fragonard’s figures de fantaisie series—quickly executed portraits of young women, often idealised and chraacterised by spontaneity and charm. X-ray analysis revealed that the girl originally faced the viewer, but Fragonard repainted her looking down at her book, emphasizing her absorption and the intimate moment.
The Reader is housed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., acquired in 1961 through the generosity of Ailsa Mellon Bruce. It exemplifies the Rococo style’s emphasis on lightness, grace, and playful elegance, while also foreshadowing Impressionism through its vibrant brushwork and focus on fleeting moments of beauty.

I hung this in the stairwell of our house, near some other Renoir pictures. My daughter says it looks like she is looking at her when she walks up the stairs.
it's called "The Excursionist", she is holding a walking stick. Renoir was an impressionist, I don't think this is an actual person. The finished framed picture arrived and looks better than the online pic - Beautiful!

Absolutely superb Art Deco poster. The colours are vibrant, sympathetic to the era and perfect for use. I framed it and hung above the entrance to my Art Deco inspired lounge room. Stunning!
