The Purification of the Temple Postcard
This is a reproduction of “The Purification of the Temple” of about 1600 by El Greco. This iconic painting depicts a dranatuc episode in the life of Jesus, an episode that El Greco painted at least four different times. He was in the midst of intense activity in which he was executing several major commissions. He was about fifty-nine years old when he painted this masterpiece. El Greco had been born in Crete as Domenikos Theotokopoulos. He worked under Titian in Venice where he was influenced by Caravaggio and Tintoretto. His early work clearly shows Italian and Byzantine influences. He settled in Spain in about 1570 and developed his own distinctive style, of which this is one of the most striking examples. This masterpiece is an oil on canvas and measurs 16.5 by 20.6 inches. It is in the Frick Collection in New York City.
