Hildebrand, who stands below her on the stairs, is clad in a suit of armour, signifying his role as her protector. His face, partially obscured, conveys the melancholy of a man caught between duty and love. The armour also foreshadows the violence and tragedy that will ultimately tear the lovers apart.
