Hildebrand, who stands below her on the stairs, is clad in a suit of armour, signifying his role as her protector. His face, partially obscured, conveys the melancholy of a man caught between duty and love. The armour also foreshadows the violence and tragedy that will ultimately tear the lovers apart. Despite the constraints of their situation, the lovers' touch is gentle and full of unspoken emotion.
