The Loyalist Memorial Sculpture Gardens, Bahamas Poster

"The Loyalist Memorial Sculpture Garden" by Catherine Sherman. Unveiled in 1987, The Loyalist Memorial Sculpture Garden is in the centre of the town of New Plymouth in Green Turtle Cay, The Bahamas, and is a national monument of The Bahamas. The central monument depicts two Loyalist women arriving in The Bahamas surrounded by 24 busts of descendants of Loyalist families. One young woman holds a conch shell, an important Bahamian symbol, while the other holds the Union Jack, the flag of Great Britain. Green Turtle Cay is one of the smaller islands off the coast of Great Abaco Island. The Loyalists were people who remained loyal to the British Crown after the American War of independence in 1776. Many Loyalists in the northern American colonies fled to Canada, while Loyalists in the more southern American colonies fled to the islands of the Bahamas. Green Turtle Cay was one of the first islands settled in The Bahamas, in the 1770’s by the Revolutionary War Loyalists. Many of the island’s 500 or so residents can trace their ancestry back to these Loyalists. The Loyalist Memorial Sculpture Garden was commissioned by the Historical Society of Green Turtle Cay. Much of the island and the rest of the Abaco islands were severely damaged when it was struck by Hurricane Dorian (Category 5) in August 2019. I don't know what the town looks like in 2021 as I post this photograph, taken in November 2017.
