The Little Mermaid Denmark Postcard

The Little Mermaid is a bronze statue by Edvard Eriksen, located at Langelinie promenade in Copenhagen. Unveiled in 1913, the statue depicts the transformation of a mermaid into human form, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's famous fairy tale of the same name. It is one of Denmark's most famous tourist attractions and a symbol of the city. The sculpture sits on a rock at the waterside, gazing wistfully out into the harbour. Over the years, it has unfortunately been the target of vandalism, but it is always restored to its original state. Commissioned in 1909 by Carl Jacobsen (son of the founder of Carlsberg), who was fascinated by a ballet adaptation of the fairy tale, the statue is relatively small, measuring only 1.25 metres tall and weighing 175 kg. Despite its size, it draws thousands of visitors daily. The statue's simple, elegant form and its location by the water make it a poetic and iconic piece of art, perfectly capturing the spirit of Danish folklore.
