Postcard inspired by an iconic depiction of two lovers in a passionate embrace.
The name of the painting is Il bacio (Italian for The kiss) and it was painted in 1859 by Milanese artist Francesco Hayez.
Francesco Hayez was the leading artist of Romanticism in mid-19th-century Milan, renowned for his grand historical paintings, political allegories, and exceptionally fine portraits.
Il Bacio is also a tribute to the romantic and patriotic ideals of the Italian unification movement (the Risorgimento), the embracing couple representing the alliance between Italy and France.
