The Emigrant Ships Calendar

Many people are familiar with the large ocean liners such as Titanic or Aquitania. Here are images of the less-known ships that carried emigrants from across Europe to the United States. Most of the ships you see here were shorter than 500 feet in length but they packed about 800 people in steerage for the voyager to America. By comparison, RMS Titanic was just over 882 feet in length. Such large liners were associated with wealth and glamour, but what made these "ships of state" profitable was those passengers in steerage. I have tried to include a good selection of these small liners but the photographic record is limited. What you see in this calendar are public domain images available from the Library of Congress.
