The Big Stump, Florissant Fossil Beds, WY Postcard

The Big Stump, the stump of a giant Redwood tree has a base of 12 feet and is estimated to have been 230 feet tall and 500-1000 years old when it's base was buried by a volcanic lahar, preserving the base while the rest of the tree died. After excavating it local residents tried to cut the stump into pieces so it could be sent to Chicago for the Worlds Fair in 1893. Two saw blades that failed to do so are still embedded in the stump. The Big Stump is the most popular attraction within Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, Colorado.
