    The Big Stump, Florissant Fossil Beds Magnet

    The Big Stump, the petrified stump of a giant Redwood tree has a base of twelve feet and is estimated to have been 230 feet tall and 500-1000 years old when it's base was buried by a volcanic lahar. After excavating it local residents tried to cut the stump into pieces so it could be sent to Chicago for the Worlds Fair in 1893. Two saw blades that failed to do so are still embedded in the stump. It is now a within Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, Colorado and one of it's most popular attractions.
