By William Sidney Mount, is a unique crossover piece as it combines two types of paintings that the artist was best known for, portraits and genre paintings. Mount had a strong interest in music as he was not only a composer and musician, but he also designed a musical instrument. This piece is part of a grouping consisting of three paintings total commissioned by William Schaus for the firm of Goupil & Company. Banjo player is possibly man named George Freeman.
