"Teton Bear Eating Berries, Wyoming" by Catherine Sherman. A bear eats red berries by the shore of Oxbow Bend of the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming on a mid-September morning. The bear (I think it's a grizzly bear based on the shape of its ears and nose) deftly grabbed each branch and stripped the berries with its nimble lips, quickly moving to grab the next branch to eat more berries. My husband and I were driving past the bear and might not have seen it except for the crowd of photographers surrounding it, held at a distance by officials. Oxbow Bend is a popular spot to view wildlife. Grizzly bears need to eat about 20,000 calories a day in the late summer and early fall months leading up to hibernation. It’s estimated that an adult male grizzly consumes 200,000 berries per day during the height of the berry season.
