Elisabeth of Austria was Queen of France for three and a half years, as the wife of King Charles IX. She was a highly educated woman who spoke four languages fluently, but had a very sheltered upbringing. Her husband kept his mistress, but she and Charles were still relatively close.
She and Charles had one daughter together, so on Charles' death the throne went to his younger brother. Elisabeth returned to the Holy Roman Empire, where she founded a convent. She died there aged 37. Her daughter had predeceased her.
