Rabindranath Tagore [Bengali: রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর ], 1861–1941, was an Indian polymath who brought about the new age in Indian culture, particularly in Bengal by his overwhelming literary contributions and social interactions. Author of Gitanjali and its "profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse", he became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 ; his seemingly mesmeric personality, flowing hair, and other-worldly dress earned him a prophet-like reputation in the West. His "elegant prose and magical poetry" remain largely unknown outside Bengal. He was the composer of the India’s national anthem.
