In international comparison, Switzerland's transport infrastructure is considerably expanded. It occupies just over 2% of the total land area and about a third of the settlement area. In 2020, the road network covered 83,274 km, of which the motorways accounted for 1,544 km. The railway network was approximately 5196 km at the time of the last survey in 2015. In the field of air transport, the three airports of Zurich, Geneva and Basel provide Switzerland with access to European and global centers. In addition, a total of eleven regional airports serve primarily business, tourism and work aviation. Switzerland’s transport infrastructure will be completed by 127 km of cogwheel railway lines, 327 km of tramlines, almost 1000 km of cable cars and 109 km of oil pipelines (60 km of which are inactive). As far as recreational transport is concerned, a marked network of 66 000 km of paths is available to hikers and 20 000 km of bicycle and mountain bike riders.
