This photograph shows a cross-section through the root of a grass-like plant that lives in wetlands and forms huge reed banks. Known as Sweet Flag, they form a spike covered in tiny flowers and their stems and leaves are filled with air pockets that allow oxygen to diffuse down to the roots and stems that are submerged under water. When cut, the leaves give off a pleasant, sweet scent and so they were used as a floor covering in medieval times.
