Swallowtail Case-Mate iPhone Case Playing Cards

The design for this crest is based on 'Agehachō-mon no mon-wari zu to kenshūkai tekisuto' (Swallowtail butterfly crest division diagram and training text) from 'Kyoto Monshō Ue-eshi' (Kyoto crest painter) listed in 'Nihon Monshō Dai-zukan' (Encyclopedia of Japanese Crests) (created on March 28, 2013). 'Fuchō' refers to a butterfly at rest with its wings folded horizontally, while 'Agehachō' refers to a butterfly perched with its wings raised. The 'Agehachō' that appears in family crests is generally not the same as the swallowtail butterfly commonly known. It was surprising to learn that the 'Agehachō' in patterns and the biological 'Agehachō' are different. It was also surprising to discover that the name of the pattern is distinguished by whether the wings are raised or lowered. (From 'Exploring Family Crests' by Keiichi Morimoto)
